On Sunday, March 20, 2024, Colorado House Democrats approved legislation that prohibits the sale of AR-15s and certain 9mm pistols. According to the report by Breitbart News, the legislation, HB24-1292, specifically targets 9mm pistols with threaded barrels that can accept a detachable magazine.
Additionally, the text of HB24-1292 states that any semiautomatic handgun, regardless of caliber, would be banned if it has a threaded barrel and accepts a detachable magazine. The ban extends to semiautomatic handguns that do not accept a detachable magazine but can be easily modified to do so. Colorado Public Radio highlighted that the ban was passed by the House with a vote of 35 to 27.
State Rep. Ken DeGraaf (R) emphasized the importance of focusing on understanding why individuals do not value life rather than solely focusing on firearms.
DeGraaf said, “We should probably get to a point where we look at why communities don’t value life.”
