Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Jim Jordan, has outlined a timeline for the GOP-controlled House to decide on whether to proceed with the official impeachment of President Joe Biden. The decision is expected shortly after the first of the year, as reported by Newsweek.
The House Oversight Committee is currently conducting an inquiry into the Biden family, initiated by then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in early September. The focus of the Biden impeachment inquiry revolves around President Biden’s alleged involvement in his son Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings. The White House has consistently denied any presidential involvement in Hunter’s business.
Last week, Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer signed subpoenas for Hunter Biden, President Biden’s brother James Biden, and other family members. Additionally, a subpoena for Rob Walker, a former business associate of Hunter, was approved. Hunter is scheduled for a closed-door deposition on Dec. 13, James Biden on December 6, and Walker on November 29, according to Newsweek.
Jim Jordan, also a member of the Oversight Committee, shared his perspective on the impeachment timeline during an interview with Fox News. He stated, “I believe that we will get the depositions and the interviews done in this calendar year and then make a decision early next year whether there are actual — the evidence warrants going through articles of impeachment and moving to that stage of the investigation.” Jordan emphasized the constitutional duty to conduct oversight, focusing on facts and evidence rather than politics.
The White House responded, accusing Republicans of playing politics and diverting attention from crucial priorities such as passing a funding measure. White House spokesman Ian Sams criticized the subpoenas as a partisan political smear campaign, urging extreme House Republicans to prioritize their responsibilities instead.
Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson is expected to propose a two-step spending measure that funds most of the government through early next year, addressing concerns about a potential government shutdown.
That said, Newsweek added:
The House Oversight Committee has spent months investigating the Biden family, issuing subpoenas for Hunter Biden’s and James Biden’s bank records and former associates of the president’s son to testify. According to House Republicans, the Biden family has cumulatively received more than $24 million from foreign nationals, including from countries like China, Russia, Ukraine, Romania and Kazakhstan, over a five-year period.
The House Oversight Committee has tracked financial transactions and compiled a body of evidence illustrating Joe Biden’s awareness, participation, and gains from his family’s influence-peddling endeavors. Now, the committee plans to summon members of the Biden family and their associates for questioning based on this evidentiary record,” stated Comer in a prior announcement.
The Kentucky Republican further stated that the records demonstrate how the Biden family profited from business dealings “at the expense of U.S. interests.”
