President Donald Trump has recently announced his commitment to “remove bureaucrats and cleanse the system” following a potential victory in the 2024 election.
Trump’s strategy involves implementing Schedule F, a measure designed to remove certain job protections from federal civil service employees, allowing their dismissal.
This move has the potential to reshape the federal workforce and address concerns about political bias among government officials, often referred to as the “Deep State.”
In response to Trump’s proposal, the administration of Democrat President Joe Biden is taking steps to counter it before it can be enforced.
During the final days of his term, Trump issued an executive order that introduced a new classification for federal workers. This order established a Schedule F category for managers in roles involving confidentiality, policy determination, policy formulation, or policy advocacy.
These employees, many of whom are part of the federal civil service, would no longer enjoy the same job security as before.
Upon assuming office, President Biden reversed this executive order, nullifying its effects.
However, in response to Trump’s recent commitment to push forward with his plan, President Biden’s administration has introduced a proposed rule aimed at making it more challenging to reclassify workers.
The rule, as outlined in the Federal Register, includes commendations for the work of civil service employees while simultaneously limiting the circumstances under which workers can be reclassified and the number of workers who can be affected by such a change.
