David Axelrod, a former senior advisor to Barack Obama, has cautioned his fellow Democrats about their attempts to manipulate the upcoming 2024 presidential election. Axelrod’s concerns were prompted by the increasing number of state-level Democrats who are advocating for the exclusion of President Donald Trump from the 2024 ballots. In an interview with CNN’s “OutFront” host Erin Burnett, Axelrod, who held the position of senior advisor during Obama’s presidency from 2009 to 2011, expressed his apprehension that such actions would ultimately have negative consequences, leading to the division of the nation.
“I have very, very strong reservations about all of this,” Axelrod told CNN’s OutFront host Erin Burnett.
“I do think it would rip the country apart if he were actually prevented from running because tens of millions of people want to vote for him.”
“I think if you’re going to beat Donald Trump, you’re going to probably have to do it at the polls,” he continued.
Axelrod proceeded to elaborate on the manner in which the Democrats’ lawfare strategy inadvertently benefits Trump’s position. He highlighted that a significant aspect of Trump’s agenda revolves around unveiling the corrupt bureaucracy that manipulates governmental authority to single out him, his followers, and the entire American populace.
“A lot of the motivation for [Trump’s] candidacy was as a legal defense strategy,” Axelrod said.
“He wanted to set up a construct…which says that they’re coming after him because he’s running for president and they’re trying to prevent him from being president.”
Axelrod expressed further concern that the Democrats’ political strategy of consistently accusing Trump before the election has only served to enhance his momentum.
“We’ve run this experiment, he’s only gained since he started getting indicted,” Axelrod noted.
“What you thought might be kryptonite for him has turned out to be battery packs, and this is a big one for him.”
“All of this is strengthening him in the Republican primary,” he added.
