President Donald Trump strongly criticized Judge Lewis Kaplan, who was appointed by Bill Clinton, in response to the recent ruling in the defamation lawsuit filed by E. Jean Carroll.
Trump has expressed his determination to challenge the ruling, which he considers to be a surprising and politically biased decision. For those who may have overlooked the details, the jury granted Carroll a substantial compensation on Friday.
The AP reported:
“A jury awarded $83.3 million to E. Jean Carroll on Friday in a stinging and expensive rebuke to former President Donald Trump for his continued social media attacks against the longtime advice columnist over her claims that he sexually assaulted her in a Manhattan department store.”
Trump has made it clear on social media that he intends to challenge the verdict, indicating that Judge Kaplan, who is believed to have a biased stance, will be a significant target for his legal team.
“Absolutely ridiculous!” Trump wrote.
“I fully disagree with both verdicts, and will be appealing this whole Biden Directed Witch Hunt focused on me and the Republican Party.”
He added, “Our Legal System is out of control, and being used as a Political Weapon.
“They have taken away all First Amendment Rights.
“THIS IS NOT AMERICA!”
Then, in a subsequent post, Trump wrote:
“There is no longer Justice in America.
“Our Judicial System is Broken and Unfair!”
Trump has consistently maintained his innocence, vehemently denying the sexual assault allegations made by Carroll. Instead, he has contended that Carroll fabricated the claim as a means to promote her book. Trump firmly asserts that he has never even crossed paths with Carroll, asserting that she is merely a pawn in the Democrats’ larger scheme to undermine his presidential campaign. Notably, Carroll has failed to provide any substantiating evidence for her allegations and is unable to provide a specific date for the alleged assault.
As Trump’s appeal has not yet been filed, the precise arguments his legal team will present remain unknown. However, based on public statements from both Trump and his legal team, it is reasonable to anticipate that some of their arguments will revolve around Kaplan and his alleged mishandling of the case. Trump’s attorney, Alina Habba, for instance, expressed the following sentiments following the jury’s decision to award Carroll $83 million.
“We were stripped of every defense – every single defense – before we walked in there, and I am proud to stand with President Trump because he showed up, he stood up, he took the stand, and he faced this judge.”
