House Speaker Mike Johnson convened with former President Donald Trump on Friday to advocate for fresh initiatives aimed at safeguarding the integrity of future elections, specifically those slated for 2024.
At Mar-a-Lago, Johnson engaged in a productive discussion with Trump, shedding light on proposed legislation centered on bolstering election integrity. During the subsequent press conference, the speaker unveiled a bill that would necessitate individuals to substantiate their American citizenship before participating in any federal election.
“So what we are going to do is introduce legislation to require that every single person who registers to vote in a federal election must prove that their an American citizen first. They have to prove it. That will be a new part of the federal law and a very important one,” Johnson said. “Our bill will establish new safe guards, it will put us on par with virtually every other democracy around the world that also prohibits non-citizen voting.”
Johnson stated on Friday that the legislation will mandate states to eliminate individuals who are not citizens from their current voter registries.
