WATCH: Congresswoman Pushes Tax Exemptions Based On Race

During an interview on “The Black Lawyers Podcast,” Freshman Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) proposed the idea of exempting black Americans from paying taxes as a means of reparations. However, she also acknowledged the potential challenge of implementing this idea due to the existence of black individuals who are already not paying taxes. This suggestion comes after Crockett gained attention for spreading the debunked myth that U.S. border patrol officers “whipped” Haitian migrants.

“I don’t remember which celebrity, but it was actually a celebrity,” the progressive congresswoman recalled.

“And I was like, ‘I don’t know if that’s not necessarily a bad idea’…One of the things that they proposed is black folk not have to pay taxes for a certain amount of time,” Crockett continued.

Crockett advocated for the notion that reparations should be implemented in some manner due to the historical injustices faced by black individuals. She emphasized that not only is there a debt owed for the labor that was exploited and lives lost, but also the significant disparities that persist to this day.

Furthermore, the congresswoman highlighted the importance of cohesive reparations plans between the federal and state governments. She expressed concern that without proper coordination, individuals would flock to different states demanding their share, leading to a lack of uniformity and potential chaos.

“And so we don’t want to see that — this is definitely something that needs to be thought through,” she said.

Crockett went on to criticize “people that aren’t even willing to do the [reparations] studies, aren’t willing to invest to make sure we can roll this out the right way.”
